Franziska Spohr is completing her dual degree in industrial engineering with a specialisation in international technical sales management at ebm‑papst. During her fourth practical semester, she had the opportunity to spend two months at the Farmington site in Connecticut, USA. Preparations for the stay began in January with the visa application and were made easier with the support of colleagues and visa experts at ebm‑papst. After a successful appointment at the American Consulate in Frankfurt, nothing stood in the way of the adventure.
After arriving in New York and travelling on to Hartford, Franziska moved into her flat in New Britain. On her first day at work, she was warmly welcomed by her colleagues and quickly found her feet in the American working environment. For the duration of her stay, ebm‑papst provided her with a hire car, which she could use both for commuting to work and for private excursions.
At the office, Franziska got to know various departments, took part in meetings and was given several tours of the company. This highlighted both similarities and differences with the Mulfingen site. As part of her project work entitled ‘Market analysis for extractor hoods in North America’, she was able to gather valuable information in direct exchange with American colleagues and learn what is important in the US market. The support of Natalie, who herself studied at the DHBW and was sent to the subsidiary for several years, was particularly helpful.
Even after work, Franziska spent a lot of time with her colleagues – whether at barbecues in the garden, yoga in the park or brunch at the diner. American culture proved to be open and warm, and a quick ‘How are you doing?’ quickly developed into a conversation. She was particularly impressed by the positive attitude and relaxed lifestyle.
Hartford and the surrounding area offer numerous leisure activities. Shopping at Westfarms Mall and trips to Newport (Rhode Island) or Boston were on the agenda. Sightseeing with the Duck Boat and street food at Quincy Market rounded off the experiences. The eight weeks flew by. To conclude, the colleagues visited J Timothy's Tavern, a restaurant known for its chicken wings. On their last day of work, they organised a potluck with typical American dishes.
‘My time in the USA was incredible and I gained so many impressions. I met new colleagues and got to experience everyday working life in the “American way of life”.’

Franziska returned to Germany the following day. Her time in the USA was marked by new impressions, exciting encounters and experiencing the ‘American way of life’. Throughout her stay and during the organisation in advance, she received excellent care and support from ebm‑papst. Back in Germany, she is putting the finishing touches to her project work before the fifth theory semester begins.
